Toronto Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo announced Monday that Jay Triano has been promoted to head coach and signed to a three-year contract. Triano took over the head coaching duties on an interim basis December 3, 2008 following the dismissal of Sam Mitchell. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Despite some difficult circumstances this past season, Jay Triano never stopped coaching, teaching and leading this team which resulted in a very strong finish,” said Colangelo. “After undertaking a thorough evaluation process, it is clear that Jay is the right coach to guide this team in the future.”
Triano is the seventh head coach in franchise history. He guided the club to a 9-4 mark in its final 13 outings this past season, including wins over Eastern Conference playoff participants Chicago, Orlando and Philadelphia, and a 12-15 record after the all-star break. He finished 25-40 overall.
Triano served seven seasons (2002-2008) as an assistant on the Raptors’ coaching staff. He became the first Canadian born and Canadian trained coach in the NBA when he was hired in 2002 as an assistant coach to Lenny Wilkens.
A native of Niagara Falls, Triano was the head coach of the Canadian men’s national team from 1998-2004 posting a 52-42 (.553) record. During his stint at the helm of Canada Basketball Triano had the opportunity to coach “Captain Canada” Steve Nash, who was voted the National Basketball Association’s Most Valuable Player in 2005 and 2006. Triano led Canada to a semifinal berth in the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico and to a 5-2 record, second best to the United States, in the 2000 Olympics.
Triano has also served as an assistant coach of the USAB Select Team (2007 and 2008), the head coach of the NIKE Skills Academy in Vancouver (2006) and Toronto (2007), and for the past six years as a coach at the prestigious EURO CAMP in Treviso, Italy.
Triano served as interim head coach for one game during the 2007-08 season when Mitchell was away for a personal family matter. The Raptors defeated the New Jersey Nets, 109-91, on February 13, 2008 at Air Canada Centre.

Raptors' Calderom has finger surgery
The Toronto Raptors announced Tuesday that guard Jose Calderon underwent surgery this morning to repair ligament damage and capsular laxity to the ring finger of his left hand. Recovery time is expected to be six to eight weeks.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Brent Graham at Toronto Western Hospital.
This past season, Calderon averaged career highs of 12.8 points, 8.9 assists (fourth in the NBA) and 34.3 minutes in 68 games (all starts). He led the NBA in assists-per-turnover ratio (4.21) for a second consecutive season. He also established an NBA single-season free-throw percentage record of .981 (151-for-154).

Raptors sign Douby
Douby, a 6-3, joined the BayHakws on March 11 and has played in five games, averaging 18.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 28.6 minutes. He scored in double-figures in all five games, including a season-high 23 points in a 107-98 loss at
Selected in the first round, 19th overall, by the Sacramento Kings in the 2006 NBA Draft, Douby averaged 4.1 points and 1.0 rebounds in 10.7 minutes over 116 career games with the Kings before being released by Sacramento on January 21, 2009.
In 95 career games at Rutgers University, Douby averaged 17.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists, finishing his career ranked sixth in school history in scoring (1,690) while holding the school’s career record for points scored in a single season (839, 2005-06). During his junior year, Douby led the Big East in scoring, and finished sixth nationally, with 25.4 points per game and earned first-team All-Big East honors.

Raptors, Heat make long rumored O'Neal-Marion swap
The Toronto Raptors announced Friday they have acquired four-time NBA All-Star forward Shawn Marion, guard Marcus Banks and cash from the Miami Heat in exchange for forward-centre Jermaine O’Neal, forward Jamario Moon and a conditional draft pick.
“I am obviously very familiar with Shawn on both a personal and professional level and feel he will ideally complement our roster and benefit our team in a significant way,” said Bryan Colangelo, Raptors President and General Manager. “As far as his pending free-agent status, this is not a move intended to clear space or predetermine a next move. It will however provide flexibility to both Shawn and the Raptors.
"Marcus will add scoring and defensive punch to our lineup and should benefit from the change of address.
"This is a win-win for both Toronto and Miami and we wish JO and Jamario the best," added Colangelo.
Marion has averaged 17.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 1.3 blocks and 37.7 minutes in 717 regular season games over 10 seasons with Phoenix and Miami. He finished in the Top 10 in the NBA in rebounds and steals on seven occasions. He was named All-NBA Third Team in 2005 and 2006, and a Western Conference All-Star in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Marion, 30, averaged double figures in points and rebounds in four seasons (2000-01, 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2007-08). He has averaged more than 9.0 rebounds a game in every season but his rookie campaign. He posted career bests of 21.8 points and 11.8 rebounds in 2005-06, and 2.28 steals in 2002-03. He scored a career-high 44 points versus Boston on February 22, 2006 and grabbed a personal-best 24 rebounds February 25, 2006 versus Charlotte and November 9, 2007 at Miami. His career high for steals came versus Minnesota with eight February 6, 2006.

He was a 2003 first-round pick by Memphis and dealt to Boston on draft night. He played his final two collegiate seasons at UNLV where he averaged 18.1 points and 4.3 assists in 63 games.
O’Neal averaged 13.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 29.7 minutes in 41 games with the Raptors this season. He was acquired July 9, along with the draft rights to Nathan Jawai, from the Indiana Pacers for T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic, Maceo Baston and the draft rights to Roy Hibbert.
Moon was signed as a free agent in 2007. In his two seasons with the Raptors, he averaged 8.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 26.9 minutes in 132 games.

Raptors exercise option on Bargnani
The Toronto Raptors announced Monday they have exercised the fourth year team option on the Rookie Scale Contract of forward Andrea Bargnani. Bargnani is now guaranteed through the 2009-10 season. In accordance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, the Raptors had until October 31 to exercise their option on Bargnani. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Bargnani was selected by Toronto with the first overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. He has averaged 10.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in 143 regular season games. He’s shot .832 (259-311) from the charity stripe in his two seasons with the club. He scored a career-high 28 points versus the Los Angeles Lakers on February 1, 2008 and grabbed a personal-best 11 rebounds on two occasions (November 11, 2007 versus Memphis and February 24, 2007 at Charlotte).
The 7-foot, 260 pounder was named to the 2007 NBA All-Rookie First Team, and participated in the T-Mobile Rookie-Sophomore Challenge during the 2007 and 2008 All-Star Weekend.

Raptors waive F/C Sampson
The Toronto Raptors waived forward-centre Jamal Sampson.
The Raptors signed Sampson as a free agent September 29. He appeared in one game in the preseason where he had two points and three rebounds.
