Deja Vu in Portland?

The parallels are obvious.

In 1984 Kentucky center Sam Bowie entered the NBA draft and, after the Houston Rockets selected Hakeem Olajuwon with the top overall pick, the Portland Trail Blazers took Bowie over North Carolina shooting guard Michael Jordan with the second selection.

Of course, Jordan was picked third by the Chicago Bulls, and the rest is history. "Air Jordan" would go on to be one of the greatest players in basketball history, earning five Most Valuable Player trophies and winning six NBA Championships.

Greg Oden sprained his right foot and is expected to miss two-to-four weeks.

To make matters even worse, two other future Hall of Famers - Charles Barkley and John Stockton - were also taken after Bowie, whose promising career was derailed by a series of leg injuries.

Fast forward to 2007. The Blazers select can't miss center Greg Oden from Ohio State over sensational scoring threat Kevin Durant.

It might be quite the stretch to compare Durant to Jordan, but there's little question that the former Texas star is going to develop into one of the NBA's best scorers over the next decade.

Oden, meanwhile, missed his rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee and, after over 500 days between real games, he was diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain after landing awkwardly in the Blazers' season-opening 96-76 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

The injury had disaster written all over it. "Lisfranc" was on the tip of everyone's lips, but afraid to be muttered.

Finally, the Blazers were able to breathe a sigh of relief on Wednesday when an MRI and CAT scan confirmed Oden had a mid-lateral right foot sprain and will miss only two to four weeks.

Still, leg injuries to a 7-foot, 285-pound men aren't exactly comforting.

Hindsight is the only exact science in sports, and with that firmly in their corner, many experts have called Portland's decision to draft Bowie one of the worst moves in NBA history.

Sports Illustrated even called the former Kentucky standout the biggest NBA draft bust ever. A ridiculous statement considering Bowie was a supremely talented player that finished his NBA career averaging 10.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.78 blocks per game.

The label of "bust" is tagged on Bowie thanks to the injuries and Jordan. However, few remember at the time of the '84 draft, Bowie was the logical choice for the Blazers since the team had just selected Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler, a shooting guard, during the prior season.

Lightning may be on the verge of striking twice in Portland.

At the time of his selection, few disagreed that Oden was the right choice but the injuries could derail everything.

Meanwhile, twenty years from now, if Durant is cobbling together his induction speech for the Naismith Hall of Fame and other players from the '07 draft like Atlanta power forward Al Horford and Sixers swingman Thaddeus Young develop into perennial All-Stars, the revisionists will be back, ridiculing the Blazers and breaking out the "bust" word all over again.

The truth is always far less interesting.

Sometimes it all boils down to luck, and the Trail Blazers aren't feeling all that lucky right now.

Same old Sixers

No one noticed. After all, there was some pretty big things going on across the street. But, the Philadelphia 76ers opened up their 2008-09 season Wednesday.

And it wasn't just any opener. Two of the most improved teams in the Eastern Conference (supposedly) met when Toronto came to town and faced off with the revamped Sixers.

To accommodate the fans, the Sixers moved up the starting time of the game by an hour, so that everyone could get somewhere to watch the Phils clinch the World Series.

The Sixers were of course the last Philadelphia team to win a title when Cheeks teamed with Julius Erving and Moses Malone to form one of the greatest teams in NBA history during the 1982-83 season.

Things haven’t exactly gone smoothly for Philly's basketball team since then and the last time the franchise felt this optimistic entering a season, Hall of Fame power forward Charles Barkley was throwing his weight around the basket.

'The Round Mound of Rebound' last played with the Sixers during the 1992-93 season and the team hasn't had a real inside presence since.

Enter Elton Brand. Brand was pedestrian in the opener but still recorded a double-double and he will be as advertised.

The rest of the team? Unfortunately, it's the same old Sixers. They can't shoot the three and they don't defend it.

The Raptors abused the Sixers from beyond the arc in an alarmingly easy victory and the two shooters Ed Stefanski brought in -- Kareem Rush and Donyell Marshall -- spent most of the night watching things from the $1,000 dollar seats.

Cheeks' rotation was certainly a head-scratcher and Willie Green continues to pile up undeserved minutes.

It's not time to panic in Philly but I would enjoy that Phillies championship. The Sixers won't be adding to it.

Rockets pick up option on Brooks

Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced tonight that the team has picked up the option on the contract of guard Aaron Brooks.

Brooks (6-0, 161, Oregon) led the Rockets this preseason in scoring average (14.4) and assists per game (4.1). He was the only Houston player to post two 20-point games this preseason, as well as topping the Rockets in assists a team-best four games. Brooks also registered a game-high 23 points (7-16 FG, 4-8 3FG, 5-6 FT) vs. Sacramento (10/17/08). He holds a regular season career high of 22 points vs. New York (1/5/08), which includes a career-best four 3-pointers made.

Selected by Houston in the first round (26th overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft, Brooks averaged 5.2 points and 1.7 assists in 51 games of his rookie season with the Rockets. He was also one of the top-10 young NBA players named to a USA Basketball Men’s Select Team that was chosen to help prepare the 2007 USA Senior National Team for its gold-medal run at the FIBA Americas Championship 2007. In addition, Brooks earned T-Mobile Rookie of the Month honors for 2007 NBA Summer League.

Dallas gets All-Star game

DALLAS, Oct. 30, 2008 - Dallas has been selected as the site of NBA
All-Star 2010, Commissioner David Stern, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban
and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones jointly announced today during a press
conference outside the American Airlines Center.

Following the mantra that "everything is bigger in Texas," the 59th NBA
All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at the new Dallas
Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, which will have a seating capacity in excess
of 80,000. This collaboration between the NBA, and the ownership groups of
the Mavericks and Cowboys, will afford all Mavericks season ticket holders
a chance to partake in the pageantry of the NBA All-Star Game. The T-Mobile
Rookie Challenge and NBA All-Star Saturday Night festivities will take
place at American Airlines Center, home of the Mavericks. 2010 will mark
the first time the All-Star competitions are split between two venues since
Houston in 1989 when The Summit hosted All-Star Saturday Night and the
Astrodome hosted Sunday's All-Star Game.

"Dallas is a vibrant city with a passionate sports fan base that will
embrace the NBA All-Star experience," said Stern. "We appreciate the
collaborative efforts of Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones on what will surely be
one of the most memorable basketball events of all time."

The 2008-09 season is the 25th year that Turner Sports features NBA
All-Star coverage, with the 2010 NBA All-Star Game the eighth consecutive
year the All-Star Game will be televised in primetime on TNT. The All-Star
Game will be seen by a worldwide television audience in more than 200
countries and will be broadcast in more than 40 languages.

"This is an exciting announcement for the Dallas Mavericks, the cities of
Dallas and Fort Worth and most importantly Mavs fans," said Cuban. "The
partnership of the Mavs, NBA and the Dallas Cowboys will create an amazing
weekend of fun and excitement with the pinnacle being the NBA All-Star Game
in front of the largest crowd to ever see a basketball game."

Dallas is no stranger to NBA All-Star, as Reunion Arena played host to the
event in 1986, when Eastern Conference Coach K. C. Jones guided his squad
to a 139-132 victory.

NBA All-Star competitions get underway on Friday, Feb. 12, as the league's
top rookies and second-year players square off in the T-Mobile Rookie
Challenge. The following day's festivities feature an all-inclusive skills
showcase known as NBA All-Star Saturday Night, which is comprised of Haier
Shooting Stars, a competition featuring NBA and WNBA players and NBA
legends, PlayStationR Skills Challenge, a contest of top guards working
against the clock to complete a series of passes, free throws, lay-ups and
agility drills, and the ever-entertaining Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. Perhaps
the most exciting event of NBA All-Star Saturday Night is the Foot Locker
Three-Point Shootout, which debuted during the 1986 Dallas NBA All-Star
festivities and was won by Larry Bird. The 2010 event will showcase six of
the game's elite marksman vying for the coveted title.

During NBA All-Star 2010, the NBA will continue to celebrate its tradition
and commitment to social responsibility with a schedule of NBA Cares events
taking place throughout All-Star. NBA Cares will partner with schools,
government and local non-profit organizations in Dallas and surrounding

The last football stadium to host the NBA All-Star Game was the Alamodome
in San Antonio, where the Michael Jordan-led Eastern squad notched a
129-118 victory in front of 36,037 fans in 1996.

The largest crowd ever to watch an NBA All-Star Game was in 1989 when the
Western Conference posted a 143-134 victory at the Astrodome in Houston in
front of 44,735 fans. Behind 28 points and nine rebounds from Game MVP Karl
Malone, the West scored a record 87 first half points. John Stockton,
taking over as the West's floor leader for the injured Magic Johnson,
finished with 11 points, five steals, and 17 assists. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,
Johnson's replacement on the West roster, played in a record 18th and final
All-Star Game.

Blazers breathe sigh of relief

A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) Scan today confirmed Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden has a mid-lateral right foot sprain.

The MRI revealed a couple of avulsions that are not believed serious and do not require surgery.

Oden is expected to be out 2-4 weeks.

The injury occurred during the first quarter of Portland’s Tuesday night game at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Warriors extend Nellie

The Golden State Warriors have signed Head Coach Don Nelson to a contract extension, it was announced today by President Robert Rowell. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.

“We’re elated that Don has elected to sign an extension,” said Rowell. “He has proven to be one of the most successful and innovative coaches in the history of our game and his continued presence on the sidelines is certainly a prominent asset for our team and organization. Our fans and players enjoy his entertaining style and we all look forward to the day he establishes the NBA’s all-time wins record for a coach.”

Nelson, 68, is currently the second-winningest coach in NBA history (1,280 wins), trailing only Lenny Wilkens (1,332) on the league's all-time victory list. Over the first two seasons of his most recent stint with Golden State, Nelson has posted a combined 90-74 record (.549) and guided the Warriors to their first consecutive winning campaigns since 1990-91 and 1991-92.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue to coach this team,” said Nelson. “I’ve really enjoyed the last two years in the Bay Area and I’m excited about the future and the potential of our young team. Additionally, I’d like to thank Chris Cohan, the entire Warriors organization and our great fans for their incredible support. This is a special place for me.”

Last season, Nelson guided the Warriors to a 48-34 record, marking the team’s best record since 1993-94 and just the ninth time in franchise history (since 1946) and the third time since 1975-76 that the team has amassed 48 victories in a single season. Additionally, Golden State’s 48-34 (.585) record in 2007-08 marked the best record for a non-playoff team since the NBA adopted its current 16-team postseason format prior to the 1984 NBA Playoffs.

Nelson returned to Golden State prior to the 2006-07 campaign, leading the Warriors to a 42-40 record that season and their first trip to the NBA Playoffs in 13 years. Additionally, he guided Golden State to a First Round triumph over the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks, marking the first time that a #8 seed had defeated a #1 seed in a seven-game series in NBA history.

Entering in his 30th season as an NBA head coach in 2008-09, Nelson has compiled a 1,280-954 (.573) record in 2,234 regular-season games in 29 years. Only Wilkens has coached more NBA games (2,487). In fact, as Nelson embarks on his 45th year in the NBA as a player, coach, general manager or consultant, only Wilkens has more combined games as a player and head coach than the 3,287 that “Nellie” has registered in his career.

Wolves exercise options on Foye, Brewer

The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced that the team has exercised the third-year option on forward Corey Brewer and the fourth-year option on guard Randy Foye.

Brewer, a second-year forward from Florida, averaged 5.8 points and 3.7 rebounds in 22.8 minutes per game during his rookie campaign and ranked fourth among all NBA rookies with 0.96 steals per game. Brewer scored in double figures 18 times last season, and his 18 rebounds at Atlanta on Dec. 6 were the most by a Wolves rookie in 12 years.

Foye, the seventh overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft out of Villanova, appeared in 39 games for the Wolves last season after missing the season's first three months while recovering from a knee injury. A member of the NBA All-Rookie Team in 2007, Foye averaged 13.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game last season.

Oberto out with atrial fibrillation

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Fabricio Oberto will miss the team's first two games of the 2008-09 season due to atrial fibrillation.

On Tuesday at practice Oberto alerted the Spurs training staff that he felt fluttering in his heart. After being seen by the team's medical staff he had an EKG which confirmed he was experiencing atrial fibrillation. Last night he underwent a cardioversion which restored his heart to its normal rhythm.

Over the next five days Oberto will receive daily EKG exams to confirm that his heart maintains its normal rhythm. Barring any unforeseen complications, he is expected to be available for the Spurs-Mavericks game on 11/4.

Spurs pick up option on Mahinmi

The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have exercised the third-year team option on center Ian Mahinmi’s rookie scale contract. Mahinmi is now signed through the 2009-10 season. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are very excited about Ian Mahinmi’s development,” said Spurs General Manager RC Buford. “We’ve literally seen him grow up in front of our eyes, since he joined us he’s grown more than an inch and gained over 30 pounds. He is a talented young man who has continued to work hard and improve as a basketball player. Being named to the D-League First Team last season – in his first year in the States – is an indication of what a bright future he has.”

Mahinmi, who turns 22 on November 5, is entering his second season with the Spurs. He split the 2007-08 campaign between San Antonio and the Austin Toros, the NBA Development League team owned and operated by the Spurs. Mahinmi started the season in San Antonio, appearing in six games with the Spurs, averaging 3.5 points in 3.8 minutes, before being assigned to the Toros on 11/21.

Mahinmi was named to the 2008 All-NBA Development League First Team. In 46 games with the Toros, he averaged 16.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.70 blocks in 29.6 minutes while shooting .615 (276-449) from the field and .766 (219-286) from the line. Mahinmi ranked 19^th in the D-League in scoring, second in field goal percentage, eighth in rebounding and ninth in blocks. For the season Mahinmi posted 16 double-doubles. He scored in double figures 38 times, with 20-or-more 17 times and 30-plus four times. Mahinmi scored a season-high-tying 32 points (11-15 FG, 10-16 FT) and grabbed a season-best 17 rebounds vs. Utah on 12/21.

In four games in the 2008 D-League Playoffs, Mahinmi averaged 18.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.50 blocks in 38.3 minutes. In three games in the D-League Finals, he averaged 16.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.67 blocks as Idaho won the series 2-1. Mahinmi had 21 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 steals and 2 assists in 46 minutes in the Toros 108-101 Game 3 loss at Idaho on 4/25.

Mahinmi was selected by the Spurs in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft with the 28^th overall pick. He was signed by the Spurs on 8/23/07 after spending the previous four seasons in the French A League.

Mavs exercise option on Williams

The Dallas Mavericks announced today they have exercised the option on forward Shawne Williams for the 2009-10 season.

“We are excited to exercise the option on Shawne’s contract,” said General Manager/President of Basketball Operations Donnie Nelson. “He is a young player that has improved every season and has a bright future as a Maverick.”

Williams (6-9, 225) was acquired in a trade with the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Eddie Jones on October 10, 2008. He was selected by Indiana with the 17^th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. The third-year forward averaged 6.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 65 games (3 starts) last season with the Pacers improving on his rookie numbers of 3.9 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in 2006-07.

He played five games for the Mavericks this preseason and averaged 2.0 points and 1.6 rebounds in 8.6 minutes.

Williams out for Jazz

Utah Jazz star guard Deron Williams (left ankle inversion sprain) and forward Matt Harpring (right ankle rehab) will not play in today's regular season opener vs. Denver.

Harpring did not see action in the preseason while Williams suffered the ankle injury at Chicago on October 18 and did not play in the Jazz’s preseason finale vs. Portland on October 23. Williams is also doubtful for Saturday’s game vs. the L.A. Clippers.

Heat exercise option on Cook

The Miami HEAT announced today that they have exercised the third year Player Option on Daequan Cook. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cook, a 6’5”, 210-pound guard, has appeared in 59 regular season games (19 starts) and has averaged 8.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 24.4 minutes. Last season, Cook set new HEAT rookie records in both three-point field goals made (79) and attempted (238) while shooting 33.2 percent accuracy from beyond the arc which was the fourth highest single-season percentage for a HEAT rookie. Additionally, Cook ranked among the NBA rookie leaders in three-point field goals made (2^nd), three-point field goal attempted (2^nd), three-point field goal percentage (3^rd), scoring average (8^th), minutes per game (10^th), assists per game (tied-10^th) and rebounds per game (tied-16^th).

Cook was originally drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round (21^st overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft. His draft rights were acquired by the HEAT along with Philadelphia’s 2009 second-round draft pick and cash considerations for the draft rights of Jason Smith (20^th overall selection) on draft night.

Sixers move up home opener due to World Series

The Philadelphia 76ers today officially moved the start time of their home opener against the Toronto Raptors at the Wachovia Center on Wednesday, October 29 to 6:00 p.m. (from the scheduled 7:00 p.m. time) in anticipation of a World Series game being played at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex on Wednesday, October 29.

"We moved the start time of our home opener to 6:00 p.m. to allow our fans an opportunity to attend our game and to be able to see the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series," said Lara Price, Senior Vice President of Business Operations.

Bucks claim Croshere

The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired forward Austin Croshere off of waivers from Indiana. In a subsequent move, the team requested waivers on forward Adrian Griffin.

Croshere (6-10, 235) comes to the Bucks with 11 years of NBA experience. He spent his first nine seasons with the Indiana Pacers, the team that drafted him with the 12th overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft. He followed up his Pacers career with one-year stints in Dallas (2006-07) and Golden State (2007-08). He averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 44 games with the Warriors last season. He comes to Milwaukee with 645 regular season games to his credit and career averages of 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds. The 33-year-old has also appeared in 68 playoff games and owns postseason averages of 6.7 points and 3.6 rebounds.

Griffin (6-5, 230) appeared in two preseason games with the Bucks.

The Utah Jazz have requested waivers on guard Gerry McNamara.

Bulls bring back Ruffin

The Chicago Bulls announced today that the team has re-signed forward/center Michael Ruffin to a contract. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Ruffin (6-8, 248) was a member of Chicago’s 2008 preseason roster but missed seven games due to a left ankle sprain.

Rockets' Brooks out with ankle contusion

Houston Rockets guard Aaron Brooks has been diagnosed with a bone contusion in the right ankle and is expected to miss 1-3 weeks with the injury.

Raptors exercise option on Bargnani

The Toronto Raptors announced Monday they have exercised the fourth year team option on the Rookie Scale Contract of forward Andrea Bargnani. Bargnani is now guaranteed through the 2009-10 season. In accordance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, the Raptors had until October 31 to exercise their option on Bargnani. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bargnani was selected by Toronto with the first overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. He has averaged 10.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in 143 regular season games. He’s shot .832 (259-311) from the charity stripe in his two seasons with the club. He scored a career-high 28 points versus the Los Angeles Lakers on February 1, 2008 and grabbed a personal-best 11 rebounds on two occasions (November 11, 2007 versus Memphis and February 24, 2007 at Charlotte).

The 7-foot, 260 pounder was named to the 2007 NBA All-Rookie First Team, and participated in the T-Mobile Rookie-Sophomore Challenge during the 2007 and 2008 All-Star Weekend.

Knicks cut Ewing Jr.

The New York Knicks waived forward Patrick Ewing, Jr. Monday.

Originally acquired from the Houston Rockets on Aug. 29, 2008, the rookie appeared in three preseason games.

Warriors waive Kurz

The Golden State Warriors have waived forward Rob Kurz.

Kurz, who was originally signed as a free agent September 9, appeared in four of Golden State’s six preseason games, averaging 4.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 14 minutes per game.

Spurs waive Hairston

The San Antonio Spurs have waived guard/forward Malik Hairston.

Hairston averaged 5.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in six preseason games for San Antonio.

Isiah overdoses

WCBS in New York is reporting that former New York Knicks president Isiah Thomas overdosed on sleeping pills.

Thomas was rushed to White Plains Hospital for treatment, but his condition is not yet known.

Sources told the television station that police arrived at Thomas' home shortly after midnight Friday morning in response to a 911 call from a cell phone.

Thomas was fired by the Knicks on April 18.

“Isiah Thomas spoke with members of the New York Knicks organization and is ok," the team said in a statement. "He is dealing with a family matter and we will have no further comment. He has asked that we respect his privacy, and we will."

Bucks waive Freije

The Milwaukee Bucks have requested waivers on forward Matt Freije. Freije, 27, signed a free agent contract with Milwaukee on October 1. He appeared in five preseason games, averaging 7.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 12.0 minutes.

Bulls exercise options on Noah, Sefolosha and Thomas

The Chicago Bulls announced today the team has picked up the options for the 2009-10 season for forward Tyrus Thomas, guard Thabo Sefolosha and forward/center Joakim Noah. The announcement means that all three players will be under contract for the Bulls for the 2009-10 season.

In two seasons with Chicago, Thomas (6-9, 215) has appeared in 146 games (31 starts) and averaged 6.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg and 1.01 bpg in 15.7 mpg; he has shot .443 from the field and .673 from the line. Selected to the 2006-07 T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie Second Team, Thomas was drafted in the first round (fourth overall) by Portland in NBA Draft 2006 and was traded to the Bulls, along with Viktor Khryapa, for the draft rights to LaMarcus Aldridge.

Sefolosha (6-7, 215) has played in 140 games (26 starts) the last two years for the Bulls and posted averages of 5.1 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.4 apg in 16.5 mpg and shot .427 from the field, .338 from behind the arc and .658 from the line. Sefolosha was selected in the first round (13^th overall) by Philadelphia in NBA Draft 2006 and was traded to the Bulls in a draft-day deal for the draft rights to Rodney Carney and cash considerations.

Noah (6-11, 232) enters his second season with the Bulls, after appearing in 74 games (31 starts) his rookie year. In 2007-08, he compiled averages of 6.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.1 apg, 0.92 spg and 0.86 bpg in 20.7 mpg; he shot .482 from the field and .691 from the line. The Bulls selected Noah in the first round (ninth overall) in NBA Draft 2007.

NBA expands use of instant replay

The NBA Board of Governors voted to allow the expanded use of instant replay by game officials, beginning with the 2008-09 season, the league announced today. The two approved proposals allow referees to use instant replay for the following scenarios:

· To determine at any point during a game whether a field goal was correctly scored as a two- or three-point field goal, and, for the purposes of awarding the correct number of free throws, whether a shooter was fouled while taking a two- or three-point attempt.

· When the game clock malfunctions during a play concluding with no time remaining on the clock (0:00) at the end of any quarter or overtime period.

With respect to the first scenario, review would occur at the discretion of the game officials, and would be based on a conclusion by the crew that they cannot be reasonably certain whether the shot was a two- or three-pointer. In the second scenario, game officials are currently required to reconstruct the timing of a play occurring during a clock malfunction; the use of replay would enable them to do so with substantially greater accuracy.

Taylor to head NBA Board of Governors

NBA Commissioner David Stern today announced that Glen Taylor, owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves, has been unanimously elected Chairman of the NBA Board of Governors. Taylor replaces Miami Heat Managing General Partner Micky Arison, who served as Chairman for the past three years.

"I want to extend my gratitude to Micky Arison for his three years of service and invaluable contributions as the Chairman of our Board," Stern said. "We are fortunate to have someone with Glen Taylor's experience and knowledge to step in and ensure the same high standards that Micky has exhibited during his tenure."

"This is a great honor to be elected Chairman of the NBA Board of Governors," Taylor said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for my peers and fellow owners in the league. This is a unique opportunity to work with Commissioner Stern, his staff and the NBA both nationally and internationally to build the NBA brand. I accept this not only on behalf of myself, but the entire Timberwolves organization. I believe it speaks to our reputation as a franchise within the league."

Along with membership on the Board of Governors, Taylor previously served as the Chairman of the NBA's Audit Committee and has been a member of the Advisory/Finance, Planning and Labor Relations Committees.

Taylor, a former Minnesota state senator, has served as the majority owner of the Timberwolves since March 23, 1995. During his ownership, Taylor has overseen eight playoff teams including the 2004 edition of the Wolves who advanced to the Western Conference Finals.

Taylor is Chairman of the Board of Taylor Corporation. The Taylor companies, which are involved in printing, marketing and technology-based industries, include more than 70 operating divisions in 19 U.S. states, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Mexico.

Taylor's business savvy has been recognized by Corporate Report magazine, which honored him as its Executive of the Year in 1987, and the Sales and Marketing Executives of Minneapolis/St. Paul, who awarded him with their Sales Executive of the Year Award in 1999. He was also inducted into the Minnesota Hall of Fame by Twin Cities Monthly Magazine.

Through personal involvement, Taylor has remained active in many civic and charitable causes. Last preseason, Taylor and his Timberwolves players and coaches led an NBA Cares imitative, in partnership with the Starkey Hearing Foundation, to fit several hundred children with hearing aids during the team's training camp in Istanbul, Turkey. Taylor and his family have provided financial assistance and participated in other Starkey missions to Africa, Egypt and Central America.

Timberwolves waived three including Richard

The Minnesota Timberwolves waived guard Blake Ahearn, forward Chris Richard and center David Harrison.

Ahearn, signed as a free agent on Sept. 29, appeared in five preseason games for the Wolves, averaging 7.8 points and 1.2 assists in 11.6 minutes per game.

Minnesota selected Richard in the second round (41st overall pick) of the 2007 NBA Draft. The Florida alum appeared in five games this preseason, averaging 1.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 11.6 minutes per game. In his rookie season with the Wolves, Richard appeared in 52 games, averaging 1.9 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.

Harrison, signed as a free agent on Oct. 9, has been sidelined throughout the preseason with a strained right calf.

Suns exercise option on Tucker; waive rookie Hite

The Phoenix Suns have exercised the team's option on swingman Alando Tucker for the 2009-10 season.

The 6-6, 205-pound Tucker enters his second season with the Suns after originally being selected by Phoenix with the 29th overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft. In his rookie campaign last season.

Tucker split time between the Suns and the club's then-NBA Development League affiliate in Albuquerque. In 21 games (19 starts) in the D-League, Tucker averaged 27.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists and was named the D-League.com Performer of the Week for the week of Dec. 10. Tucker averaged 3.7 points and 1.3 rebounds in six games with the Suns in 2007-08.

Despite missing three games, Tucker is the Suns' third-leading scorer this preseason, posting averages of 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 45.2 percent from the field.

A native of Lockport, Ill., Tucker played five seasons at the University of Wisconsin after receiving a medical redshirt, where he averaged 16.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 134 collegiate games from 2002-07. Tucker finished as the Badgers' all-time leading scorer and
was named a consensus All-American and the Big 10 Player of the Year in his senior season. Tucker was also one of four finalists for the Naismith Trophy given to the national player of the year in 2007.

Phoenix also waived guard Robert Hite. Hite appeared in six exhibition contests for the Suns this preseason without a start, averaging 7.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists in
14.8 minutes.

Knicks Houston will have new role

The New York Knicks entered on-going discussions with Allan Houston about having a new role for him within the franchise.

The Orlando Magic have waived Dwayne Jones. Jones appeared in three preseason games for the Magic, averaging 1.3 ppg. and 4.0 rpg. in 9.3 minpg.

Knicks exercise options on Collins, Chandler

The New York Knicks have exercised the fourth-year option on the contract for guard Mardy Collins and the third-year option on the contract for forward Wilson Chandler.

New York also waived guard/forward Dan Grunfeld. Originally signed as a free agent on Sep. 25, the rookie appeared in one preseason game.

Blazers cut Jackson, Hill

The Portland Trail Blazers waived forward Luke Jackson and rookie center Steven Hill, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today.

"We want to thank Luke and Steven for their contributions during training camp and preseason and wish them all the best for the future," said Pritchard. "They've conducted themselves as real pros on and off the court and we believe both of them have a bright future in basketball."

A former All-American at the University of Oregon, Jackson (6-7, 215) played in three preseason games, averaging 5.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 19.3 minutes. The four-year NBA veteran was 5-for-15 (33.3%) from the field and 1-for-4 (25.0%) from 3-point range.

Hill (7-0, 245) saw action in three preseason games, recording averages of 1.0 points, 0.7 rebounds, 0.67 blocks and 9.0 minutes. The rookie from Arkansas was a member of the team's 2008 NBA Summer League squad and signed on August 27, along with Jackson and Jamaal Tatum.

Cavs cut Dupree

The Cleveland Cavaliers waived forward Ronald Dupree.

Dupree played in four games during the Cavaliers current preseason, averaging 6.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in 15.0 minutes per game.

Nuggets cut five, including Parker, Patterson

The Denver Nuggets have waived G Mateen Cleaves, F Nick Fazekas, F James Mays, G Smush Parker and F Ruben Patterson, team Vice President of Basketball Operations Mark Warkentien announced today.

Cleaves, 6-2, 188, averaged 3.4 ppg, 2.0 rpg and 2.0 apg in five preseason games (one start).

Fazekas, 6-11, 253, appeared in four preseason games posting averages of 2.0 ppg and 2.5 rpg.

Mays, 6-9, 230, tallied averages of 4.5 ppg and 3.5 rpg in two preseason games.

Parker, 6-4, 190, averaged 5.3 ppg, 3.3 apg and 1.3 rpg in four preseason contests.

Patterson, 6-5, 223, appeared in six preseason games posting averages of 7.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg and 1.2 apg.

Mavs waive G McLeod

The Dallas Mavericks have requested waivers on guard Keith McLeod.

McLeod (6-2, 190) signed as a free agent on July 11, 2008 after playing internationally with Montepaschi Siena in 2007-08. He averaged 4.5 points, 0.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists in 14.4 minutes in four Euroleague games. He was sidelined the entire preseason due to a right hamstring strain.

The four-year NBA veteran has played with five different teams (Minnesota, Utah, Indiana, Golden State and Dallas) and has career averages of 5.5 points, 2.7 assists and 1.3 rebounds in 200 games.

Sixers waive Reiner

The Philadelphia 76ers have waived big man Jared Reiner. He appeared in one preseason game for the Sixers, scoring 6 points in five minutes of play.

Reiner (6-11, 245) attended the University of Iowa and was not selected in the 2004 NBA Draft but signed as a rookie free-agent with the Chicago Bulls for the 2004-05 season. In two seasons with the Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks, Reiner has played a total of 46 games with four starts, averaging 1.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in 8.2 minutes per game. This past summer, Reiner participated in the Sixers entry in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, averaging 1.4 points and 2.2 rebounds. Last season, Reiner played abroad in both Spain and Germany.

Bulls cut Ruffin; Spurs axe three

The Chicago Bulls waived forward Roger Powell and forward/center Michael Ruffin.

Powell (6-6, 225) appeared in four preseason games with the Bulls and averaged 2.8 ppg and 0.8 rpg in 4.5 mpg.

Ruffin (6-8, 248) missed seven preseason games due to a left ankle sprain.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs waived guard/forward Devin Green, guard Salim Stoudamire and center Darryl Watkins.

Green appeared in four games during the preseason, averaging 7.0 points, 2.8 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 1.25 steals in 21.8 minutes per game.

Stoudamire played in two preseason games, averaging 5.5 points, 2.5 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 19.0 minutes of action.

Green saw action in five preseason games, averaging 3.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in 15.0 minutes of action.

Rockets waive Harris; Jazz cut two

The Houston Rockets waived forward Mike Harris.

Harris (6-6, 240, Rice) averaged 3.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in three preseason games this year. In his rookie NBA season, Harris averaged 3.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 17 games with the Rockets in 2007-08. The former standout at Rice University was also a third-overall selection in the 2006 D-League Draft by Colorado.

Meanwhile, Utah waived forwards Kevin Lyde and Gabe Muoneke.

Lyde appeared in three preseason contests with the Jazz, averaging 5.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 10.3 minutes. Muoneke recorded four preseason games, registering 1.3 points and 0.8 rebounds in 7.5 minutes a game.

Mavs waive three

The Dallas Mavericks waived guards Cheyne Gadson, JaJuan Smith and forward Reyshawn Terry Wednesday.

Gadson (6-3, 190) signed as a free agent after spending last season in the D-League. He went undrafted out of Oklahoma State in the 2003 NBA Draft. Gadson saw action in 5 preseason games and averaged 1.6 points and 1.4 assists in 7.4 minutes per game.

Smith (6-2, 195) was signed by the Mavericks as a rookie free agent after he went undrafted out of Tennessee in the 2008 NBA Draft. Smith played in all 7 preseason games, averaging 4.7 points and 0.9 steals in 9.6 minutes per game.

Terry (6-8, 232), the 44th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, was acquired by Dallas from Orlando on draft night (6/28/07). The Mavericks received the draft rights to Terry in exchange for the draft rights to forward Milovan Rakovic. He spent last season as a member of Aris TT Bank (Greek A1 League) and averaged 8.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in 19 Euroleague games. Terry saw the floor in 5 preseason games and averaged 4.4 points and 1.2 rebounds in
7.0 minutes per game.

Raptors waive F/C Sampson

The Toronto Raptors waived forward-centre Jamal Sampson.

The Raptors signed Sampson as a free agent September 29. He appeared in one game in the preseason where he had two points and three rebounds.

Ramblings from the Wachovia Center

Philadelphia, PA (The Sports Network) - The Sixers and Cavs got together in a preseason contest from the Wachovia Center on Tuesday.

Here's some observations from press row. Samuel Dalembert gets the night off and a blast from the past, Theo Ratliff got the start at center for the Sixers.

No surprise that LeBron had his way with Andre Iguodala and the Sixers early.

Meanwhile, ex-St. Joe's star Delonte West returned to Philly with the Cavs. West sat out 12 days earlier in the preseason with some personal problems that included depression and anger issues.

Elton Brand, who has been exceptional for most of the preseason, really struggled with Ben Wallace and was just 1-of-8 in the first half from the floor. He did pull down nine rebounds, however. Brand is not the kind of player who goes into a funk in other areas when his shot is not falling.

Most of the Sixers offense is coming from the bench in the first half. Willie Green and Lou Williams both had nine points to lead Philly, while rookie Marreese Speights continues to impress with seven points and four rebounds in about eight minutes of action in the first half.

LeBron's new playmate, former Bucks point guard Mo Williams, was spectacular in the opening half, compiling 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting and two assists.

In the battle for the Cavs shooting guard spot, Sasha Pavlovic got the start but Wally Szczerbiak played almost twice as many minutes after Sasha got in foul trouble.

Sixers were the worst three-point shooting team in basketball last season and brought in Kareem Rush and Donyell Marshall to rectify that. Rush was 0-fo-1 from long range in the first half and Marshall didn't get off the bench. Meanwhile, the Cavs hit six of their first seven from long range.

Philly dominated the third quarter as Iguodala rebounded and started to get a hot hand as did Andre Miller and Brand. E.B. had 12 points and 11 boards through three. Can you say Comeback Player of the Year?

As for LeBron -- How about 20, 8 and 4 through three.

Sixers couldn't buy a bucket down the stretch and the Cavs pulled away with James sitting safely on the bench. Daniel Gibson was the star of the game, netting 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long range. The Cavs were plus-17 in Gibson's 28 minutes on the floor.

The 76ers still can't shot, 0-for-9 from long range and outscored 24-0 from beyond the arc.

Former Sixers great Bobby Jones, one of the greatest defensive players on all-time, was on hand.

Cavs waive Vernon Hamilton

The Cleveland Cavaliers waived guard Vernon Hamilton Monday.

Hamilton played in four games during the Cavaliers current preseason, averaging 0.8 points, 0.8 assists and 1.0 rebound in 6.8 minutes per game.

Williams out two weeks

An MRI conducted on Deron Williams’ ankle Monday revealed the All-Star guard suffered a second degree inversion sprain.

The MRI also showed all bone structure and tendons in and around the ankle to be normal.

The time frame for Williams’ return to action is a minimum of two weeks.

Originally selected by the Jazz in the first round (third overall) in the 2005 NBA Draft, Williams has appeared in 242 of a possible 246 regular season games and all 29 playoff games in his first three NBA seasons, posting career averages of 15.3 points and 8.1 assists in 34.4 minutes per game. Williams started all 82 games for the Jazz in 2007-08, averaging 18.8 points and 10.5 assists in 37.3 minutes per game. He became only the third player in NBA history to total 1500+ points and 800+ assists while shooting .500+ in a single season (Kevin Johnson, Magic Johnson) and was also selected to the All-NBA Second Team.

Miami's Jones has successful surgery

The Miami HEAT announced that forward James Jones underwent successful surgery on Saturday, October 18th to repair a ruptured extensor tendon in his right wrist.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Ann Ouellette and consulted by HEAT team physician Dr. Harlan Selesnick at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables. Jones is expected to be out three months.

Roster moves galore

Lots of roster moves today...

The Spurs waived forward Charles Gaines, who averaged 3.3 points in four preseason games for San Antonio.

The Bulls waived forward Elton Brown and guard Darius Washington. Brown (6-9, 250) appeared in two preseason games and averaged 2.5 ppg and 2.0 rpg in 8.0 mpg.

Washington (6-2, 195) saw action in two preseason games and averaged 8.0 ppg in 13.0 mpg.

The Bucks requested waivers on guards Ron Howard and Kevin Kruger.

In three preseason games, Howard, 25, posted averages of 2.0 points and 1.0 assist per game.

Kruger, 25, played in two games and averaged 4.0 points, 1.5 assists and 1.0 rebound per game.

The Mavericks requested waivers on forward Charles Rhodes.

Rhodes (6-8, 245) was signed by the Mavericks as a rookie free agent after
he went undrafted out of Mississippi State in the 2008 NBA Draft. He saw
action in 5 preseason games and averaged 1.0 point and 2.4 rebounds in 6.0
minutes per game.

The Sixers waived Antywane Robinson. He appeared in three preseason games, playing a total of 15 minutes.

Robinson (6-8, 220) played all four seasons at Temple University, earning Atlantic-10 All-Conference Second Team honors his senior season. In 116 career games played for the Owls, he had 85 steals to 54 turnovers. He has yet to appear in a regular season game since going undrafted in 2006, but played preseason games for the Atlanta Hawks in 2007. After being waived by the Hawks, Robinson joined the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the D-League before playing overseas for Elan Bearnais Pau-Orthez of the French League.

Warriors waive veteran Dickau

The Golden State Warriors have waived guard Dan Dickau

Dickau, who was originally signed as a free agent October 1, appeared in two of Golden State’s first four preseason games, averaging 5.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.00 steals in 12.0 minutes per game.

Deron Williams sprains ankle

Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams suffered a left ankle inversion sprain at the 5:39 mark of the first quarter of Saturday's 88-80 win at Chicago. The injury occurred when Williams landed on the foot of Bulls guard Derrick Rose as Williams was attempting a three-pointer. X-rays on the ankle were negative and he did not return to the game.

In addition, forward Matt Harpring (right ankle rehab) was not with the team, while guard Brevin Knight (inflamed left thumb) and center Jarron Collins (right triceps tendinitis) did not dress.

Cavs' Jackson injures wrist

Cavaliers forward Darnell Jackson has experienced a non-displaced fracture of his left wrist and is expected to be out the next five to six weeks.

Blazers waive Tatum

The Portland Trail Blazers waived rookie guard Jamaal Tatum, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today.

“Jamaal came in and did a great job for us, and we look forward to watching his career progress,” said Pritchard. “We really enjoyed our time with Jamaal and wish him all the best.”

Tatum played in three preseason games, averaging 0.7 points, 1.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 5.7 minutes. The 23-year-old played four seasons at Southern Illinois, averaging 12.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.21 steals in 131 games.

Kings exercise option on Hawes

The Sacramento Kings exercised their contract option on center Spencer Hawes Thursday.

Hawes, the 10th overall pick out of Washington in the 2007 draft, averaged 4.7 points and 3.2 rebounds as a rookie last season.

Heat's Jones has surgery; out 3 months

Miami Heat forward James Jones will undergo surgery on Saturday, Oct. 18 to repair a ruptured extensor tendon in his right wrist.

The rupture occurred during practice on Oct. 15.

After consulting with Heat team physician Dr. Harlan Selesnick, the surgery will be performed by Dr. Ann Ouellette.

Following surgery, Jones will have his wrist placed in a cast and he is expected to be out for three months

Magic get ready for 20th anniversary season

Orlando's Mickael Pietrus greeted new season ticket holders on back-to-back nights earlier this week as the Magic prepare for their 20th anniversary season.

Divac helping homeland

Former Lakers and Kings star Vlade Divac has become an adviser in Serbia’s government, according to the AP.

The 40-year-old Divac will be in charge of humanitarian issues and sports, under Vice Premier Ivica Dacic.

After retiring from the NBA, Divac moved back to his native Serbia where he runs a humanitarian organization.

Redd sits out for Bucks

Michael Redd (left knee soreness), Adrian Griffin (left ankle sprain) and Charlie Bell (left achilles tendinitis) all sat out the Bucks game with Golden State in China today. All three players are day-to-day.

Miami waives pair of players

The Miami HEAT have requested waivers on forward Omar Barlett and guard Eddie Basden. Both were initially signed as free agents by the HEAT on Sept. 26, 2008.

Barlett appeared in one game in the preseason and totaled four points and two rebounds in 9:22 minutes against Detroit on Oct. 5.

Basden also appeared in one game and was scoreless with one assist and one steal in 9:08 minutes against the Pistons on Oct. 5.

'Wolves Telfair suspended

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Sebastian Telfair has been suspended without pay Tuesday for three games, the NBA announced Tuesday.

Telfair was arrested on a gun possession charge after a car in which he was driving was stopped for going 77 miles per hour in Yonkers, New York on April 20, 2007.

Telfair, who was on the Boston Celtics at the time, was charged with second-degree possession of a handgun and driving with a suspended license. He later pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon.

"I've talked to Sebastian about the incident. This is something that happened in the past, and he is looking forward to putting this behind him," 'Wolves VP of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale said in a statement. "Since he has been a member of the Timberwolves, Sebastian has been a great teammate and has been actively involved in the community. I couldn't be more proud of Sebastian's continued improvement as a basketball player and as a young man."

Cavs' Wallace doesn't travel with team

Cavs big man Ben Wallace will not be be in Pittsburgh tonight when Cleveland faces Boston. The defensive specialist is remaining in Ohio to receive treatment for lower back tightness.

Meanwhile, Cavaliers guard/forward Sasha Pavlovic (right ankle sprain) is DOUBTFUL for the game.

Hawks waive a pair of players

The Atlanta Hawkswaived Marcus Hubbard and Frank Robinson Tuesday, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Rick Sund.

Economy hits NBA hard

"We made a decision some months ago that the economy was going to be a bit wobbly, so we began a belt-tightening that will result in a work-force reduction of about 9 percent domestically," NBA commissioner Stern said Sunday, speaking before an NBA preseason game at London's O2 arena.

Sixers pick up options on Young, Smith

Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that the team has exercised the third-year options on the contracts of Jason Smith and Thaddeus Young.

Young (6-8, 220) was selected with the 12th overall pick by Philadelphia in the 2007 NBA Draft. In 74 games with 22 starts last season, he averaged 8.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 0.99 steals in 21.0 minutes per game. He had the highest field goal percentage (53.9%) of any rookie qualifier and was named to the NBA T-Mobile All-Rookie Second Team.

Smith (7-0, 240) was originally selected by Miami with the 20th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft before the Sixers acquired him in exchange for the rights to Daequan Cook (21st overall pick), a future second round pick and cash considerations. In 76 games with one start last season, Smith averaged 4.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game.

'Wolves waive Araujo

The Minnesota Timberwolves have released center Rafael Araujo.

Araujo, a 6-11 center from BYU, played five minutes (one point, two rebounds) in two preseason games for the Wolves. A former first-round pick of the Toronto Raptors, he signed with the Timberwolves on Sept. 29.

One step closer to China

AEG, one of the leading sports and entertainment presenters in the world, and NBA China, have formed a joint venture to design, market, program and operate multi-purpose, NBA-style sports and entertainment arenas in major cities throughout Greater China, it was announced at a press conference today at AEG's O2 arena in London by Mr. Timothy J. Leiweke, President and CEO of AEG and NBA Commissioner David Stern.

The press conference took place prior to the game between the New Jersey Nets and Miami Heat as part of NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS. AEG developed and operates the state-of-the-art O2 arena in London.

The new joint venture will work with government bodies and agencies and local developers to oversee the design and development of world-class arenas and entertainment districts. The partnership will manage booking and marketing of a wide variety of events including basketball and other sports events, concerts, family shows, cultural events, trade shows/conventions, and various live entertainment performances.

Where feasible, the arenas will be developed in conjunction with surrounding cultural and entertainment districts potentially comprised of restaurants, retail outlets, cinemas, hotels, residential areas, sports training facilities and smaller live entertainment venues.

The new organization will be equally owned and will oversee all decisions for each development including identifying target cities and project sites, arena design and development, procurement of naming rights and other sponsorships, securing an arena anchor tenant and the hiring of key personnel.

The first discussion between representatives of AEG and the NBA about potentially joining forces to create sports and entertainment arenas in China took place at the O2 arena last October during an exhibition game between the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves as part of NBA Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS, the league's preseason tour of Europe. When it was discovered that both organizations were independently pursuing the development of world-class venues in China, they determined that working in cooperation would be in the best interest of each of their entities.

"AEG is the established leader in global arena development as evidenced by its state-of-the-art facilities in Los Angeles, London and Berlin. We are excited to partner with AEG in China where the popularity of basketball creates enormous opportunity," said Stern. "Together we will work with every level of government and the private sector to create NBA-style sports and entertainment facilities that will anchor communities and grow the sport of basketball throughout China."

"We view China as an exciting marketplace with a growing appetite for sports and entertainment. This is fueled by an emerging middle class and a great need for state-of-the-art multi-use arenas that can accommodate NBA games, sporting events and world-class concerts," said Leiweke. "Using our expertise and experience to design, manage and program venues in cities that are looking to create entertainment and cultural destinations will absolutely be one of the biggest and most important initiatives AEG has ever undertaken. Partnering with a global entity such as the NBA will become the most critical component of this initiative as the league's vision will re-define how the world views sports in the next decade."

Bucks on their way to China

The Milwaukee Bucks areon their way to China for two preseason.

New Head Coach Scott Skiles will continue pre-season preparation on the 7-day journey with games vs. the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, October 15 in Guangzhou (7 am Milwaukee, ESPN2) and Saturday, October 18 in Beijing (10:30 pm Friday, October 17, Milwaukee, ESPN2). The team will practice Tuesday after arriving in Guangzhou early Monday evening.

“The Bucks visit to China as an NBA team is a great marketing event for Milwaukee, the region and Wisconsin,” Milwaukee County Common president Tim Sheehy said. “It is part of the marquee value of having NBA basketball in this city. China is now our third largest export market. At over $1 billion dollars, the economic activity creates jobs here at home. We have a number of our members participating in this opportunity because they see value in this exposure with the NBA which is now a high profile sports entertainment business in China,” Sheehy concluded.
